Curious Index

Same thing on punt return. The punt return game the other night, that guy hit two punts and he crossed kicked them. They went 60-something, but if you did Pythagorean theorem – you know, a-squared plus b-squared equals c-squared – I bet it was about a 75-yard kick. None of you guys have any idea what that is. That’s why you write. You create a right-angle. That’s the long side and you get the 90-degree. Did you make it past Algebra I? It’s geometry, man. - Derek Dooley

Conference Realignment

My sources are telling me that we are pretty much in the OVAC they just need to call our references and its a done deal. All of the conference bullshit is really annoying, my sources, your sources, a guy i know, my dad, SHUT THE FUCK UP! Unlike most WVU fans I would actually like to hear about the actual team during the week but all I can find it what someones sources has to say about the SEC and Big XII. Hell if it wasn't for HCDH calling out our fans I dont know if most of them would even know there is a game, everyone is too busy searching every message board trying to find the latest news. Meanwhile on the field our team is finally having the success that we have known we could have for the last 2 years. Geno Smith is killing it, all of our WR's are just running wild through secondaries and all you can think about is leaving early to beat traffic! If you are so worried about getting into another conference then fill the stadium, stay for the whole game and support your team give another conference a reason to want us.

And as a side note to the guy in Section 133 that is so fucking worried about starting the wave in the 3rd quarter please do everyone a favor and sell your season tickets, dont ever get them again and watch the games in your living room. "Hey were up 2 scores why would I want to watch the rest of the game....I know i'll try to start the wave!" If your not going to watch the whole game then just dont come give your tickets to people that give a shit.

Pigsking Prognosticator week 6 picks

Week 5 Recap:
Blog picks: 4-4.......ehhh whatever, I somehow gained ground

Actual wagers:
2 unit plays 6-1, teasers: 1-2, parlay 1-1 +27.3 Units......best week of my life betting college football. Man am I ever glad I added that second 6-team parlay Friday morning.

Overall recap:

Actual wagers:
2 unit plays: 21-11-2 1 unit plays:1-1 Teasers: 6-7 Parlays: 1-5 +32.8 units..........incredible.

Just a monster weekend of actual betting. Thrilled I added the 2nd 6 teamer. I have said all along I only had to hit 1 in 13 weeks this season to make the venture VERY profitable. If I hit another one along the way it would be incredible. As for the blog picks I'll take 4-4 and gaining ground in a week I had no confidence. I feel a bit better about this week's picks. Not sure if that's a good or a bad thing.

Grumpy Suppository: Week 5 Picks

There's nothing fun about being in last place... thankfully, I'm not there anymore! But there's little more fun to be had in 2nd to last place.

Wow, great picking by the Flying Potato! It doesn't look like anyone will be able to keep pace with this gambling machine this season! (Can you feel the powers of the reverse jinx slowly creeping in?)

Nonetheless, I have picks to make! As usual, I don't have time for anything witty. Blame the job.

The Aforementioned Suck-Bag Pick of the Week: USF -2 v. Eat Shit Pitt (already cost me $1.95)
TAMU -3 v. Arkansas
COCKS -11.5 v. Auburn (alot to be said about a shitty team with alot of momentum, that team is South Carolina)
'SCONNY -9.5 v. Nebraska (Taylor Martinez is awful)
CASTRATED TURKEYS -7 v. The Fighting Dabos (Welcome to Earth, Clemson)
ALABAMA -4.5 v. Florida (only 4.5? Nick Saban and Kirby Smart only have to gameplan for 2 Gators -- Rainey & Demps)
WBGVU -18.5 v. BGSU
BAYLOR -3.5 v. Kansas State

HOWARD DEAN'S #1 FAN +3 v. Florida State (let me make it clear that I firmly believe that FSU is the better team here, but football is all about momentum and the Noles are just too banged up)
ALABAMA -12.5 v. Houston Nutt Farewell Tour
CASTRATED TURKEYS -18.5 v. That Team Down South (can someone just nuke Blacksburg and eliminate both these teams for good?)

VANDERBILT... NO, I'M NOT KIDDING +15.5 v. The Fighting Chickens

WEST "BY GOD" VIRGINIA +5 v. Geaux Fist Yourself

Basically, here's my thinking... against Mississippi State, LSU sold out against the run and dared Chris Relf to pass to beat them. Everyone knows the passing is not exactly Relf's strength, thus LSU prevailed.

Dana Holgerson is begging LSU to try and stop our run-game. We can't run it anyways, so it doesn't matter. As long as our O-Line can hold up their D-Line long enough to give Geno Smith a chance to drop back, we will be alright. I don't see this game getting too far away from the Mountaineers, basically because LSU's offense is just that bad.

LSU is a bigger favorite over us than over Mississippi State? The line is 5? Something is fishy. It's almost like Vegas is begging the public for LSU action. With 82% of SportsNation favoring LSU in this contest, we'd like to think that suspicious line isn't a result of the action, so apparently, Vegas knows something.

Expect a close game with the Mountaineers at home under the lights. Special things happen in Morgantown after the sun set. We just could see a little bit of that fabled magic on Saturday.

Go Mountaineers!!!

2 unit sweetheart teasers: 4-3

+12.8 units on the season

Contest Picks: 5-2 making me 12-6-1 so far.

Great week, netting 9.1 units. I shouldn't complain but I will. Wazzu was up 24-14 in the 3rd quarter and allowed 28 unanswered points to not only blow the cover and the 6 team parlay but also costing me the tease. It could very easily have been a 35.8 unit monster of a weekend. Alas.

On to week 4. I'll spare you the long winded analysis as I'm short on time.

Contest Picks:
1.) ND -6: Pitt secondary weaknesses play right into Irish strengths. Panthers may also be deflated from the collapse in Iowa City.

2.) TAMU -3: No real feel here. I'll take the 12th Man in a shootout.

3.) FSU -3: Following the simple rule of never, under any circumstances betting on Clemson. Classic choke spot for the perennial underachieving Tigers.

4.) Arkansas +12.5: Just seems too high. Even if Bama is comfortably winning, backdoor shuld be wide open late for high scoring Hogs.

5.) VT -18.5: No idea here. Hokies looked very average last week against Arkansas St but the Herd looked abysmal at Ohio. Marshall will play better but VT should wear them down over 4 quarters and beat them handily.

6.) WVU +5: The only way we win is if we play with a lead and put the game in Jarrett Lee's hands. They aren't built to come back. Conversely if they lead in the second half that big offensive line will play keep away and it will be very tough to rally. I'll go with some nightime magic in Morgantown.

7.) Colorado +15.5: Maybe I'm a sucker but I had this line at +7.5. The Buffs are playing better and the Buckeyes have major major issues offensively.

Actual week 4 wagers (my lines may be slightly better or worse than the ones we are locked into as I shop for the best one available and we lock our lines in early in the week):

2.2 units to win 2

1.) Cincy -7: Just don't think this year's brutal version of the Pack can keep up with the Cincy offense. Bearcats also have revenge angle.

2.) UVA -3: This Virginia team is decent. Southern Miss seems a bit down and this line simply seems too short.

3.) Maryland -9: Huge letdown spot for Temple after losing a game they should have won against Penn St. I think the Terps took some confidence from their second half performance last week and they should continue that success here.

4.) Coloraado +15.5: See Above

5.) UGA -9.5: Yes, Ole Miss is absolutely bad enough to the point that I'm willing to lay almost 10 points on the road in the SEC.

6.) ND -6.5: See above

Parlay of these 6 above: .5 untis to win 20 units

3 sweetheart teases at 2 units to win 2 units apiece (Even odds bets in which you move 3 lines in your favor 10 points but they all must hit to win.)

Number 1 : Cincy +3, UVA +7, Maryland +1
Number 2 : Colorado +25.5, UGA +.5, ND +3.5
Number 3 : Michigan pk, WVU +16, Miss St -9.5

That's it for week 4. There will be no adds (They always lose, much like the Toledo loss I added while on the road last Friday) Good luck and remember, a dollar won is twice as sweet as a dollar earned.

+3.7 units on the season

Contest Picks: 3-2-1 making me 7-4-1 so far.

Last week could have been a lot better. Clearly FAU was just a horrible play. However, Arizona State led by 14 receiving a punt in the 4th quarter and they get forced into OT where they push. I don't even want to talk about Notre Dame.. They invent ways to lose. South Florida returning a Ball State fumble on the opening kickoff to push a tease and make it a loser was also a gem. I feel like I should have been 5-1 in 2 unit plays, 2-1 in teasers and 4-1-1 in the contest picks but that's the way it goes. I don't feel like I've gotten much luck yet and I'm still up $ so I guess that's a good sign.

On to week 3

Contest Picks:

1.) LSU -3: This is a bit of a square play and I feel like Vegas is begging for LSU money. I might be stepping into a trap but I just don't see it. I believe Oregon's spread is better than MSU's and I just don't think the Bulldogs are going to be able run like they want to. This will be a typical LSU game. The Tigers will play great defense, win the field position and make timely big plays. I see the Tigers winning by 7-10. The field advantage is not a huge concern here either. I would have played this game up to -6

2.) FSU +3: No real feel here whatsoever. This is a classic stay away and just watch game if you ask me. I'm not sold that FSU is for real yet but I do know that Doak Campbell at night is a zoo. The tipping point for me here is that Oklahoma has been a very mediocre 15-10 on the road the last 4 years. I'll take my chances with the points.

3.) ND -4.5: Sell high and buy low. Clearly nobody wants the Irish right now. What can I say? I'm a glutton for torture. Notre Dame's collapse last week was one for the ages. However we know that the Irish can go up and down the field on good teams. They just can't hang on to the ball. They rank dead last in turnover margin. Turnovers are a stat I think you can expect to regress to the mean. If the Irish hang on to the ball they win going away here. We know very little about MSU after wins over Youngstown and FAU, while we know ND can score. History is not on my side but I like the Domers to finally bounce back here.

4.) Miami -2: Miami at home, with the starters back, is flat out better than this Ohio State team that nearly lost at home to Toledo and played uninspired versus a truly dreadful Akron team. That is assuming Jacory Harris doesnt throw more than 2 interceptions. I'm hoping Al Golden can calm him down and make him less turnover prone. If the Hurricanes manage to be only -1 in turnovers or better, they cover this number.

5.) Iowa -3: Awful spot for Pitt. Perhaps if Iowa had throttled ISU they could have snuck in under the radar and posed a bigger threat to the Hawkeyes. Instead, they will meet a pissed off Iowa team looking to get well. They will do so while still trying to figure out a new offense and apparently trying to jam a square peg into a round hole at the quarterback position.

6.) WVU +1: This line was WVU -4.5 in the off season and now after three combined games it has moved 5.5 points making us a dog. I think it's a gross overreaction to the Terrapins' beating of an undermanned Miami team down 6 defensive starters. The public was wowed by the offensive performance against Miami (nevermind that they got two defensive TDs) and they are overvaluing Maryland. I look for the Mountaineers to leave Byrd Stadium 3-0 with the showdown for LSU and the Gameday crew in their sights.

7.) Washington State +6: In two games (all be it against 2 horrid opponents) it appears Paul Wulf has turned the corner with Wazzu at least in terms of scoring output. San Diego St will not be as solid without Brady Hoke at the helm and after almost losing at Army last week I see this as a line that should have been -1 or -2 not -6.

Actual week 3 wagers (my lines may be slightly better or worse than the ones we are locked into as I shop for the best one available and we lock our lines in early in the week):

2.2 units to win 2

1.) LSU -3.5: See above
2.) Iowa -3: See above
3.) WVU +1: See above
4.) ND -4.5: See above
5.) Miami -2.5: See above
6.) Wash St +6: See above

Parlay of these 6 above: .5 untis to win 20 units

2.2 to win 2
Cincy -34.5: This was too many points to put in the contest or parlay picks but I like it nonetheless. The Bearcats have shown they are not afraid to run up the score in beating Austin Peay 72-0. Akron is literally one of the worst 5 teams in the country. Cincy will get well here.

3 sweetheart teases at 2 units to win 2 units apiece (Even odds bets in which you move 3 lines in your favor 10 points but they all must hit to win.)

Number 1 : LSU +6.5, Iowa +7, WVU +11
Number 2 : ND +5.5, Miami +7.5, Washington State +16
Number 3 : Tennessee +19.5, Cuse +26.5, Army +17

That's it for week 3. I'll be on the road in College Park so luckily no drunken adds this week. Good luck and remember, a dollar won is twice as sweet as a dollar earned.

WVU Fans Rock!

I would like to thank all of the Mountaineer faithful for boo-ing ou team throughout the first half of the game sat, that was awesome! Because when the team is struggling that's just what they need, hearing your dumbasses boo-ing them. However when we finally got a big lead I liked your attention to detail as you got "the wave" going around the stadium god forbid we pay attention to seven straight scoring drives.  I'm sure you got bored watching us score 45 points in the second half who wouldn't!  Also the mass exit with 9min left in the game was a nice touch I'm sure you all had something to do and weren't expecting the game to last all four quarters.....GOSH!

Week 2 picks

Alright folks after the first week we can see the cream of the crop starting to separate as I sit tied for first place, not real sure what Pigskin is doing there but you know there is always a floater that hangs around. Anyway here are my picks for the 2nd week.

ALABAMA! -10, After another early season injury sustained by the Joe "Unbreakable" Paterno I did some digging and I have found that Bobby Bowden summoned his inner Nevin Shapiro has put a bounty on ole Jo-Pa and has been paying players through a fake business he set up "Miss Prisses Cat Emporium."

MICHIGAN +4.5, This game is going to be played at night. Wow who gives a fuck! I can't wait to hear the commentary on how awesome these lights are "I was talking to the lighting engineers and they said that even though the 90 watt light bulbs give off a little bit more light the 60 watt give it a better feel and the un-lit spots on the field are just awesome!" I hope they just remind me how much impact this game has on the National Championship picture.

South Carolina -3, I'll take team bitch tits over a coach that takes his team to the pool to show off his diving skills any day. Also Spurrier said he wanted to win a game by blocking a punt at the SEC media days, by blocking a punt I think he meant going into halftime with a 45 point lead.

Miss St -6.5, Now that Sylvester Croom has this team running on all cylin.....what hes not the coach anymore. Well at least every fucking sports network made a huge deal out of his hire paid off by people paying attention to him and realizing that he sucked. Fun fact about the Auburn Utah St. game was that according to the commentators that Utah State O-Line was one of the better O-Lines in college football. Well that's interesting.

TCU -2, TCU decided that it would get an early taste of what Big East football is all about losing to a team you should beat by 14. If Gary Patterson wants to survive in the Big East be better loose that goofy ass visor, cause on the East coast we keep it trendy. In the words of Fergie "Were so 2008, your so 2000 and late!"

Whats the WVU line? IT DOESNT MATTER WHAT THE LINE IS! I'm going with WVU no matter what. Dana Holgerson SAID SO!

Pigskin Prognosticator Week 2 Picks

Week 1 Results:

2.2 units to win 2:
Miss St -27--WINNER
Missouri -17--LOSER
USF +10.5--WINNER
LSU +2--WINNER
WVU -20.5--NO ACTION
Texas A&M -15.5--WINNER

Parlay of these 6 above: .5 untis to win 20 units --LOSER

3 sweetheart teases at 2 units to win 2 units apiece (Even odds bets in which you move 3 lines in your favor 10 points but they all must hit to win.

Number 1 : Miss St -17, Mizzou -7, USF +20.5--WINNER
Number 2 : LSU +12, WVU -10.5, Texas A&M -5.5--NO ACTION
Number 3 : Texas -12.5, Southern Cal -11, Michigan -3.5--NO ACTION

Late Adds:
2.2 to win 2
Wake +7--PUSH
Fresno +9.5--LOSER

1.1 to win 1
Murray +30--WINNER
Miami +4--LOSER
WVU/Marshall ov 52.5--NO ACTION

2 unit plays: 4-2-1
1 unit plays: 1-1
.25 unit parlays: 0-1
Sweetheart Teasers: 1-0

+4.8 units in week 1

Contest Picks 4-2

Not a bad first week by any means but it was slightly disappointing I suppose given how well it started. As you can tell, any wager, tease or otherwise, involving Michigan and WVU was ruled no action because the games did not go at least 55 minutes. That turned out to be a wash on the 2 teasers, but it cost me 3 units combined on the WVU spread and the over that was likely to hit.
I also lost on Miami, a 2 unit swing, on a ridiculous late pick 6 by the Terps that was literally the only way I could have lost that wager. Oh well, that's gambling and the lucky breaks and brutal breaks should even out over the course of the season. Regardless I'll take 12 more college football weekends of +4.8 units profit and run like a thief in the night.

As for the contest picks, clearly I was off on the UGA guess but South Carolina backers were also jobbed on the late backdoor cover by ECU. I'll take 4-2 every week.

Anyway.........on to week 2.

Contest Picks:

1.) Penn St +10: I don't have a very good feel for this game overall but I'll take a stab at a decent Nittany Lion team catching double digits at home. Both teams played a 2 quarterback rotation with mixed results last week while overwhelming Kent St and Indiana St respectively. The key here is turnovers. If Penn St can hang onto the ball and score 10 points I think they will at least push this number.

2.) Notre Dame -4.5: I'm getting this a point better in my actual wager but I still love this play. I, like most people did a double take when I saw the line, figuring how easy it would be to take the Wolverines as a dog in their first night game. Upon further review, I realize that's the only thing Michigan has going for them. I think it's human to react to what you see but I think gamblers often overreact to what they see. This line is a classic case of that. The reality is Notre Dame ran up and down the field on USF, outgaining the Bulls 502-250. The Irish's 5 turnovers, 3 of which were inside the 5 yard line, allowed the bulls to win. I don't see anything that can't be rectified with better decision making and these QBs don't have a history of poor decision making. Conversely, Michigan's defense is still very very poor. Western Michigan marched up and down the field on them in a monsoon but turnovers prevented the game from being MUCH closer. I look for Notre Dame to bounce back in a big way and spoil the first ever night game in the Big House.

3.) South Carolina -3: Who in the hell even knows here? I'm going square as hell with this play. I was all but ready to take the Dawgs again until I realized how many injuries Georgia has going into this game. I just don't see any way they are ready to play this game on Saturday. However, South Carolina doesn't exactly inspire confidence after the shit show that was their performance vs ECU. They would likely be 0-1 if not for ECU literally fumbling the game away in the second half. This is a classic stay away game but I'll take the lesser of two evils here.

4.) Auburn +6.5: I got the hook with this one in my actual wager but I like it at this number as well. In my opinion this is once again a severe overreaction to one game. Everyone watched Miss St. run up and down the field against Memphis, nevermind the fact that the Tigers are going to be one of the worst 10 teams in Division 1 this year. Auburn, on the other hand was ambushed by Utah State and was insanely lucky to pull out the win. The verdict? Mississippi State isn't as good as they looked and Auburn isn't as bad. This should tell you all you need to know. The game of the week line for this game offered up by Vegas in July had Miss St as a 1 pt favorite. Do the week 1 results really warrant a 5.5 or 6 point move in the line? I don't think so. Yes Miss St is the better team, but there is no way I lay close to a touchdown on the road in the SEC this yr involving teams not named Ole Miss, Kentucky or Vanderbilt.

5.) Army +9.5: I really came close to playing FIU here (I'll explain below) but I could not pass up on this wonderful situational spot for the Black Knights of the Hudson. Army is set for their home opener after being soundly beaten by what I think will end up being a very good Northern Illinois team (They may beat Kansas straight up this week) in their season opener. I think Army is making progress and San Diego State, despite their beating of Cal Poly, will not be the same squad without Brady Hoke as head coach. Add in the fact that SDSU will travel 3k miles to play a Noon game on the East Coast and this play is a no brainer.

6.) WVU -41: Why not?

Actual week 2 wagers (my lines may be slightly better or worse than the ones we are locked into as I shop for the best one available and we lock our lines in early in the week):

2.2 units to win 2

1.) FIU +4.5: Screw the points, the Golden Panthers won't need them. Anyone that watched the Louisville/Murray State game watched one hell of a pitiful football game. I don't think the Cards are as bad as they looked last week but this game is a scenario in which the FIU strengths match up perfectly with the Louisville weaknesses. Ty Helton is a dynamic WR and the Louisville secondary is frighteningly young. They acquitted themselves quite well against an absolutely pathetic Racer passing attack (How the hell is that QB up for the IAA Heisman?) but FIU is a different animal. The Golden Panthers are also confident after a bowl win last year and a route of North Texas last week. On offense Louisville is a mess as well. They committed 5 turnovers last week, Will Steain has a sprained ankle and Teddy Bridgewater looked like an absolute mess in his one series of action last week. I hope Louisville wins by a FG but I think you are looking at the Big East's first embarrassing loss this season.

2.) Arizona State -7: Mizzou looked pretty damn pathetic in being the only one of my initial 6 bets to lose last week. New QB Ryan Franklin is clearly a work in progress and that was on display for all to see in a 17-6 win over Miami Oh. Not only was he off target passing, he also set up Miami's only score witth an INT. Now he'll head to the desert where expectations are high for a Sun Devil team that has a very solid defense.

3.) Army +9.5: See above

4.) FAU +32.5: The Owls covered 23.5 in Detroit last year against a much better MSU team. While I'm somewhat concerned that FAU has a history of laying down against BCS level teams, I just don't think the Spartans have enough playmakers to cover spreads like these. They sleepwalked through a 28-6 win over Youngstown State as a 35 point favorite last week. I look for a similar effort. If the Owls can find the end zone once, that should be enough.

5.) Auburn +7: See above

6.) Notre Dame -3.5: See above

Parlay of these 6 above: .5 untis to win 20 units

3 sweetheart teases at 2 units to win 2 units apiece (Even odds bets in which you move 3 lines in your favor 10 points but they all must hit to win.)

Number 1 : FIU +14.5, AZ St +3, Army +19.5
Number 2 : FAU +42.5, Auburn +17, Notre Dame +6.5
Number 3 : Ball St +30, BYU +17, ECU +29.5

That will be all for week 2. Luckily I won't be home on Saturday so I won't place any stupid added bets this week. Let's hope everyone plays all 4 quarters this weekend. Here's to another profitable week and remember a dollar won is twice as sweet as a dollar earned.

I had grand plans to write long, thoughtful narratives describing how I felt about all my picks and explaining why I was leaning one way, hopefully to give some insight into the tit-scubbing that is about to befall my adversaries this season.

Then I read the Potato's and the Piggy-Prog's posts and realized how gay that is.

So here's my picks bitches, enjoy the fuck out of them (my picks in BOLD CAPS)...

The Champ is Here.

Well hello everybody your reigning champ is back and I would like to welcome everyone back to football season and once again I will be providing you with some winning picks and embarrassing my competition in our season long gambling. I like to see that Pigskin here is still trying to convince people that he knows jack shit about betting on college football. I also like that Shoeless is keeping his shitty as picks short and to the point as he knows no-one will read what he writes after sending out a three-shit long email. I'm still waiting for the Grey Bush to chime in with the angriest picks ever. Alright and with that I will now reveal my week one picks. Enjoy your college football season!

LSU +1: I think we have seen it enough times like Pigskin has pointed out SEC too deep to fast. I also must agree when he says that loosing Jordan Jefferson is like loosing George Jefferson (just not as funny). Also Oregon's players will be way to high to stop looking at their new jerseys.

Boise St -3.5: I just don't know how good UGA is, and I don't think they are going to pull this one out.

USF +10: USF has the athletes to play with ND and it wouldn't surprise me if they beat a once again over-hyped ND team. Not to mention they have SCCCHHHKIP Holtz.

USC -20.5: Steve Spurrier likes to score a lot of points when he can and his teams usually get off to strong starts.

WVU -20.5: "I'm going for 70-80 every game"-Dana Holgerson, "I don't need any motivation to score more touchdowns"-Dana Holgerson

BC -3: No real analysis just like BC at home in this one.

Week 1 Prognostications

After an admittedly rough go last year in the picks, I'm back at it for another year. Let me first say for the record that I don't care for the way this is set up. Perhaps choosing only one game that I would actually put my hard earned (okay I work for the state, make that easily earned) cash on is no way to gamble. It's certainly no way to separate one gambler from another with regard to who is best at spotting weak lines and exploiting them to grind out a profit (or in the case of last year hemorrhaging money for me) over the course of the season. By locking in these marquee games as must plays, we will be wagering on very heavily bet games containing little or no value.

Ok I'm off my soap box. Given the current setup, I will make my contest picks each week and then down below, list my actual wagers placed for the weekend. I know it's likely that nobody cares how I do, but I enjoy having a forum to use to share my picks and analysis so there you have it. In my mind our contest can be a fun exercise in luck while my serious wagering can be displayed also.

Without further ado:

Contest picks:

1.) LSU +1: From a focus standpoint having your starting QB suspended due to a bar fight is never good, but from an impact on the game perspective I believe Jordan Jefferson's absence will have minimal effects. Jarrett Lee has played plenty of football for the Bayou Bengals and this game will be decided along the line of scrimmage anyway. LSU is scary good and scary deep on both the offensive and defensive lines. I expect the Tigers to gradually wear down the smaller, quicker Ducks as the game goes on and use a power run game with some play action pass along with a stingy defense to pull out a close one.

2.) UGA +3.5: This is a classic example of what I meant in my rant. I have looked at this game from several angles and there is absolutely no reason to bet this game. Anyone that tells you they know what's going to happen here is lying. Way too many unknowns on both sides. The only thing we do know is both QBs are very good. Georgia scheduled this game to get back in the national conversation and I at least would expect them to be very focused in what is a huge year for Mark Richt. I'll take the Dawgs close to home simply because I am a perennial non-believer in Boise.

3.)USF +10: I simply think this line is 3 pts too high. Then again ND is always a public darling so we shouldn't be overly surprised. Sure the Irish closed with 4 wins last year including a dominant showing against a coachless Miami team in the Sun Bowl but I think it's probably another year or so until Brian Kelley gets the ideal players for his system. Also consider that USF has won early in the season at Auburn and Florida State. Consider that Skip's ECU team beat WVU and VT in back to back weeks 3 years ago. Put it together and I don't think USF will be intimidated. If they can play their usual solid D and put the walking turnover BJ Daniels in low risk positions to succeed, the Bulls will be in this game until the end.

4.) Cocky -20.5: I have very little feel for this game but if Spurrier's boys are as good as preseason pollsters seem to think they are, they should probably cover this number. Marcus Lattimore is absolutely awesome. That is all.

5.) WVU -20.5: If Marshall's secondary plays as poorly as they did last year, we score 50 in this game. My concern coming into this year is the middle of the defense. It is going to be hard to replace Neild and I think good power running teams will exploit us up the middle. Fortunately, Marshall doesn't fit that criteria. I do expect the Cato kid at QB to be impressive at times for the Herd. He supposedly throws a very catchable ball, and is very mobile and elusive. However, starting a 180 pound true freshman for the first time in Morgantown with DE ends like Julian Miller and Bruce Irvin bearing down on him is not a recipe for success. I look for at least a 42-14 type of score here but I am hoping for a merciless beating. 77-0 would suffice.

6.) Mississippi State -27.5: The Bulldogs beat Memphis 49-7 last year with their backup QB. Memphis is literally one of the worst teams in the country and Miss St should be much improved this year under Dan Mullen. The game is on the road but let's be honest, there will be more maroon clad fans ringing cowbells than Tiger fans in the Liberty Bowl.

Actual week one wagers (my lines may be slightly better than the ones we are locked into as I shop for the best one available):

2.2 units to win 2:

Miss St -27: see above
Missouri -17: beat Miami U 51-13 last yr. Line is simply too short
USF +10.5: see above
LSU +2: see above
WVU -20.5: see above
Texas A&M -15.5: If Mike Sherman's team is really going to be an elite squad they'll win decisively against a decent SMU team.

Parlay of these 6 above: .5 untis to win 20 units

3 sweetheart teases at 2 units to win 2 units apiece (Even odds bets in which you move 3 lines in your favor 10 points but they all must hit to win.

Number 1 : Miss St -17, Mizzou -7, USF +20.5
Number 2 : LSU +12, WVU -10.5, Texas A&M -5.5
Number 3 : Texas -12.5, Southern Cal -11, Michigan -3.5

Late additions:

2.2 units to win 2
Wake +7: I was going to lay off this game but the more I looked into it I think the Demon Deacons warrant a play. This is one of Al Grohs most experienced teams since the 2006 Orange Bowl squad. This program reminds me a bit of WVU under Nehlen in that every 5 or 6 years they have a chance to be very very good. It's that time again in Winston Salem. I also expect a slight backslide from Syracuse. They were fortunate to go virtually injury free last year and were also 4-0 in games decided by 7 points or less. That good fortune isn't likely to continue.

1.1 units to win 1
WVU/Marshall ov 52.5: I don't normally bet many football totals but this one looks good. WVU could cover this by themselves and I expect Marshall to score a couple TDs

Murray St +30: Ok If your calling this an action wager you would be correct. I know I'll be sitting in front of the TV, ESPNU on cold beer in hand at 6 p.m. on Thursday. However I do have a basis for this play other than being a degenerate gambler. The Racers averaged 34 pts a game last year in their pass heavy offense. I expect the Cards to be slightly worse this year and their secondary starts the year incredibly thin.

That's plenty of action for week 1, good luck to all and remember, a dollar won is twice as sweet as a dollar earned.

College Football - Week One . . . We're Back!

Dear EFAs,

Welcome to the sixth year of The Email.  I have endured countless sleepless nights waiting to unleash my verbose football mutterings upon you all once again.  Likewise, I am sure many of you have been stocking up on barbiturates knowing that you will be sucked into reading this trash much like how you can't turn off episode of Hoarders which you know is inevitably dumbing down everyone in the room, including your child's hamster.

Now, before we go any further, I know we have some newbies on here, so we must state The Email rules.  These rules are stated once a year and are meant to protect the innocent readers of this email.  Some rules have remained the same, but much like when you call your local utility provider, some of the options have changed, so please read.  Without Further ado:

1.    The email is based upon my opinion and thus should be regarded with the utmost respect.

2.      Ohio State, the buckeye nut, and the greater state of Ohio all suck.  Each will be properly treated in the most inappropriate manner I can think of.

3.      The TV schedule is the initial reason behind this email, much like moonshine to NASCAR, so I take it seriously.  The Big Ten network will not be covered in the television schedule.  I hate ND, but I include NBC, because I like to watch them lose.  I do not currently receive the Longhorn Network, so I'm not including now.  Times are in EST and listings are based on where I live.  Don't like that?  Make your own damn schedule.

4.     I have a general distaste for Notre Dame.  Not for their history or success, but due to the irrational love fest they receive as well as the fact that they are given unfair advantages in BCS play.  A lot of people hate the Yankees and the Cowboys, but they have at least been relevant in the last twenty years and play under the same rules as my beloved, yet putrid Bills and Blue Jays.

5.       While reading this email you should face towards Morgantown, close and reopen the monitor to your laptop five times, while muttering the lyrics to Country Roads.  Ohm chants are optional.  If viewing via a desktop monitor, turning off and on the screen five times is an acceptable resolution to not being able to shut the screen.

6.       To the newcomers or to some of the readers who are starting to lose their memory, you may be wondering at this point how did I get on this email list?  Why am I still reading?  What is the meaning of life?  Did I just soil myself?  Well to answer your questions, 1 - you were either referred, you asked to be on, or The Email selected you. 2 -  I cannot help you with your problems. 3 – the meaning of life is 42.  4 – I suggest checking here.

7.       Every time you see a grammatical error or find some other issue with my writing, please remember that I am probably drinking, and if you really care about pointing these out, maybe you should be as well.

8.       Remember, Reply Alls currently forwards your message to 118 people, including my momma (but she's cool, and probably sipping a Blue Moon about now, obviously without an orange).  Type wisely you crass keyboard ninjas.

9.       Competitive banter is appreciated.  Your beer spilling, livid tirades are not considered banter, but will likely cause some tailgate humor.

 10.   Times or channels are subject to change on the schedule.  I attempt to publish this email by every Wednesday night or Thursday at the latest.  Times should be solidified by Monday, but the ESPN family of networks has been known to switch around channels of their games pretty late in the week.

11.  Any unauthorized reproduction or selling of this email is a violation of the Bro Code and will be prosecuted.

12.   It is permissible to hate the Hokies, but remember these poor things have been castrated; give them a beer if you see one.

13.   A lot of people ask what an EFA is.  Mr. Jay Stewart coined the term and I liked it, so it stuck.  Email Followers of Al.

14.   I cannot guarantee that all internet links are appropriate to watch at work or in front of your children.  I will try to stray from anything that will give you a virus, but I cannot guarantee that you perform the act in the video that you will not get hurt or receive a virus.  This link for example is one of my favorites and is relatively harmless, however; the humor may have to be explained to your young daughter if she is watching.

15.   I would be remised if I did not at least give you the opportunity to opt out this email, especially with the consumer protection laws today.  Please opt out here if need be and take a moment to provide feedback as to why you hate me.

16.   I refuse to buy into the NCAA's Bowl Subdivision crap.  It is still 1-A and 1-AA in my world and I do not find that politically incorrect.  I will not address the Big Ten's new division names either.  They are ridiculous.  I'll consider Nebraska part of the West division and Penn State in the East.

17.   Mutts Sunnyside is the official bar of this email.

18.  I'd like to figure out a way to Ice people via the email.  Please forward any ideas back to me, but know that you cannot Ice me via your suggestions, because I read my email while wearing this, which serves as a block.

19.   Check the blog for more extensive content.  Many witticisms and betting ideas passed along there.

Offseason Recap

I was tempted many a time this summer to fire up a summary recap with all the drama that was occurring across the nation, but held back.  Much like a bear, I need my off months for hibernation (I've often been likened to a polar bear btw).  However; this means that there is much to talk about over the next few weeks, just to catch up from the end of bowl season to now, and where to begin?  Obviously we were all captivated by Stew-Gate in June, but then we have Tressel mania, Willie Lyles, continued Cam Newton allegations, the implosion at Chapel Hill of the Butch Davis regime, Big 12 bickering, the Fiesta Bowl scandal, Georgia Tech/LSU violations and on and on . . . which does not even bring us to the big stories coming into the new year with all the conference realignments.  So, for those who may have been living under a rock this past year lets do a recap

-          Jim Tressel is fired at Ohio State and sentenced to death by ingestion of Buckeye nuts.  The Sweater Vest has finally exposed as the man who hid behind a clean Christian façade who truly was a behind the scenes, unethical cheat.

-          Update:  I still hate Ohio State and hope the finish in the back of their lame midwesternly named division.

-          Speaking of sweater vests, Bill Stewart has ended his career at WVU at 28-12.  Hologorson now has full reins.

-          Butch Davis has been fired at UNC.  The AD is gone too.

-          Oregon is caught up in messy recruiting scandal which involves the solicitation of man, Willie Lyles, who supposedly convinced recruits to go to Oregon.  LSU also used their services

-          Terrelle Pryor has been banned from Ohio State

-          Nebraska is in the Big Ten

-          Utah and Colorado are in the Pac 12.

-          The last two now mean that the Big Ten (12 teams) and the new Pac 12 will now have championship games, at the expense of . . .

-          The Big 12 is now a big 10, however they will remain the Big 12 as the Big 10, who has 12 teams, will remain the Big 10.

-          The Longhorns have gone the way of the Yankees (YES) and developed their own television network, which is hosted by ESPN.  Conflict of interest anyone?  More on this next week.

-          The Pirate is still out of a job, which is unfortunate, but at least we've gotten to listen to him the media outlets quite a bit.  He also coauthored a biography with ESPN's Bruce Feldman (an Email fav).  ESPN then promptly suspended one of their only true journalists, because they were afraid they wouldn't be able to continue taking it up the rear from former Pony Express member, Craig James.

-          I still hate Ohio State, and Pitt, Notre Dame, and Mayonnaise.  All of the above are disgusting.  Call me anti-establishment.

Hurricane Nevin

I had all of that written to fully recap the offseason and Miami goes and blow the whole thing up (not to mention the LSU mess).  Reading through all this crap is amazing; strippers, cash, abortions, yachts . . . where is Don Johnson (not to be confused with his estranged cousin Dave Johnson)?  Instead of making fun of Donna Shalala, which you can find plenty of online, I thought it might be fun to explore how this scandal would unfold if it occurred in Mountaineer country . . .

Starting approximately around 2003, current coach Rich Rodriguez was drumming up support to get his alma mater back on the national stage recruiting wise.  His side kick Tony Gibson wasn't getting the job done, so Rich turned to the relatively unknown coal baron, Cecil Gwaltney, to "spice up" the Morgantown scene for incoming recruits to see how the Monongalia night live compared to SEC and Big 11 country.  Cecil was charged with throwing lavish parties and generally doing whatever he could to serve the football players desires, while completely acting independently of WVU athletics.  As an avid supporter and possessor of an almost endless cash flow resulting from the sale of his coal mines to the Russians, CG had no qualms.  The following is from a testimony of the recently arrested Cecil Gwaltney:

Wild Parties:

-          Numerous accounts of posh keg parties on the roof of the Marris Country store was all the rage when Cecil first started.  Football recruits were given free keg beer and Bartons gin.  The Bulger sisters were known to be frequent hosts.

-          Fullback Owen Schmitt once infamously ate a coaster in ten seconds at Mario's Fishbowl.  What was never said about this, was that he was also taking bumps of cocaine that came courtesy of CG.  That explains this . . .

-          Further impermissible benefits were setup at the local under 21 establishments for the incoming freshman.  Upon the recognition of a player, the players would be given special deals not offered to other students at a 50% discount, typically resulting in half penny pitchers.

-          One night that got out of hand, occurred at this email's official bar, Mutts Sunnyside.  The rager was so intense, that they racked up a bill of over $25, fully funded by CG over course.  Anyone who has partied all night in that establishment knows how difficult that tab is.

-          Ever wonder why you found football players prowling around Morgantown in the summer?  First reason; Keglers sports bar set the sham of Wednesday's Ladies night featuring free wings . . . guess where the players were bused to after terrorizing the quiet summer town?  Second reason; yacht parties on Cheat Lake.  Here is a fishy picture of one former lineman after a long day of marauding the lake.  Afterward a long day out with the women, you guessed it, they all ended up at the Whippoorwill Bar n Grill, where once again it was a place where "Friends don't keep tabs."

-          The most unspeakable party was held Cecil's newly acquired apartment complex, Mountaineer Court, in 2005.  The party occurred the night after the Virginia Tech game in which Marcus Vick illustrated to fans how he felt about the Appalachian culture.  Lets just say that the competition didn't end there, as Ron Mexico showed up with his "dawgs" and a few Gs to Steve Slaton's breakout celebration.

The women:

-          Every year WVU hosts the PRT Cram.  From the alumni website, "A PRT car, which holds 16 people comfortably, is stretched to the limit when students from campus organizations squeeze "cram" into one of the cars. The record was set in 2000 when 97 students crammed into the PRT car."  CG thought it would be amusing to have a PRT cram with select football players and the Women's soccer team, late at night, with no one else around.  Wild parties would ensue.

-          We are not going to even talk about the BOT parties on the deck at Bent Willey's.

The Bounties:

-          Two WVU players received bounties from CG after a losing effort in the Orange Bowl.   Adam "Pacman" Jones received $2,000 for teaching Kellen Winslow how to be a Soldier and Quincy Wilson roped in a whopping $8,800 for laying the smack down on Brandon Meriweather in the play of the year.  It was also rumored that Wilson was paid an undisclosed amount for a yearlong sponsorship by Wierton Steel.  Company executives were not immediately available for comment.

-          Jahmile Addae was granted $1,500 in the following year for this bone chilling hit at Lane Stadium.  Numerous death threats were written to the back judge after the play.  Tony Caridi was so appalled that the hit was deemed a penalty; he decided to give Jahmile a cut of his Northside Automotive bankroll.

Shady Business:

-          Around the end of 2004, beginning of 2005, CG started a new ponzi scheme under the corporate identity of McCoy 6 Apartments.  Through the management of numerous substandard apartment buildings, Cecil was able to not only house the "student athletes", throw more wild parties, collect cash for further bounties and excursions, but was also able to keep his shenanigans out of sight and out of mind, as most wouldn't dare enter the slums of SunnySide.  Under the guise of providing a lucrative yet low cost invest that ultimately served low income tenants, Cecil had a cash cow that end only hurt the tenants that lived dumps and broken hearted investors left penniless.

-          The filth of Sunnyside also proved to open profitable means for the athletes.  Numerous players have been rumored to participate in black market couch deals, in which couches were stolen off of the porches of innocent students, sold on the black market behind Marris Country store, and usually ending up in street fires.  Tragic.

-          Another profitable business sprung up for star receiver Chris Henry, who was "secretly" growing marijuana in the WVU Arboretum, which at the time was under the watchful eye police chief Bob Roberts.  Henry and local rapper 6'6 240 teamed up with a local night club, Envy, to distribute the product.  The club was raided in 2008, well after the original criminals had washed their hands clean.  Conspiracy?  yes.

Academic Fraud:

-          It was a widespread practice for "Tutors" to sit in classes for the football players, while the players would be studying in the depths of the Mountainlair.  Their favorite study center was the Side Pocket Pub.

-          In 2007, 19 football players received Masters in Business Administration degrees from the college of Business and Economics.  18 of these students were redshirt sophomores at the time.

Lets all just hope the truth never comes out.

WVU Outlook

Ok onto current matters, the season outlook for WVU.  Personally, I'm tired of all the Holgorson hype and ready to see it on the damn field.  I like many others have high expectations, but am trying to temper myself from the unrealistic notions that we are going to average 78.4 points per game that you would assume we would achieve from reading the daily articles on Holg's offense.  I would be completely happy with the mid 30s, which would be a regression from his previous offenses, but certainly a step up from the Stew era.  Not to continue on a negative tract, but lets also come out of the clouds a bit on the defense.  Casteel had a tremendous squad last year and I'd fully expect with the young talent we have this year tied with Tandy/Miller/Garvin/Irvin, we should see a traditional Casteel defense that matures as the year goes on.  With that said, if you were a fly on the wall in the various bars around the state, well A you would probably be drunk, but B, you would think that Casteel was the love child of Chuck Noll and Buddy Ryan.  That is both a completely unrealistic and utterly disgusting thought.  He is a great coach, who I would put my utmost trust in, but lets not get too carried away with things.

My prognostication is that we will see incredible improvement on the offense, withstanding a Geno injury, and we will have a great defense by the end of the year, but we will have growing pains there.  The youth amongst the safeties, lack of experience of linebackers beyond Goode, and the second string defensive line should scare you to some degree.  I think we have talent in the first two categories, but there are too many questions there to assume everything will be just fine.  The great thing about last year's D-line is that you had Berry/Nield/Miller/Irivn/Taylor/Wright . . . we are essentially the same this year minus Berry and Nield.  I think we will be good, but the depth is concerning.  Alas, I think we are clearly the best team in the conference.  The BE will once again be weak this year, with one glimmer of hope; six out of eight teams return their starting quarterback which to me points to even greater parity in a league that is defined by parity.  I predict 10-2 with a loss to LSU and one in the Big East.  In descending order, these are the games I am worried about; LSU, USF, The Fightin' Mike Haywoods, Maryland, Cincy.  We can definitely beat anyone of those including LSU, but I'd plan on 2-3 losses.  Four would be a meltdown.  10-2, ya heard it here.

Week One Outlook

Key games to watch are Oregon v LSU in the house that Jerry built, obv implications for us, Boise St v Georgia, Appy St v VA Tech (god this would be awesome), and USF v Notre Dame.  Then a shit ton of D1aa matchups.  At Al's ranch, we will be kicking off the first Thursday night of football with a bbq feast including a plethora of natural light and keystone (hey, gotta transition out the nascar tailgating season).  We are then tailgating on the porch all day Saturday, grilling pork, and making the trek to Motown for Sunday's beat down of Marshall.  I seriously hope we thrash them.

I think it is a bit cliché as an 'Eer fan to assume that we will crush the Herd by 65 points.  I'd love to see that, but we've felt that way many times in the past.  I am anxious to see how the new era unfolds and that path begins with Marshall, so I find it a bit tough to pick a number out of the air.  In attempts to gain a working knowledge of our foe, I've been reading some of the Marshall beat lately, which if anyone else here has subjected themselves to this, you will know how brutal of an endeavor that is, and I have not came away overly impressed.  Marshall has a few players, most notably Curry, and a lot of young talent that the Doc has brought in, but sending out a large group of redshirt freshman wouldn't have me excited as a Herd Fan.  I am going with 45-17.  I'd probably give them a few more points given the past couple years, but I don't put much stock in the QB battle that they have had down there.  Always remind your neighbor Marshall fan of this though.

I Sincerely hope each and every one of you has similarly epic weekends planned to indulge in one of the great weekends of the year.  It's great to be back talking with you and I hope to see you all at the tailgates.  As always, check over at the blog for more stuff and your betting suggestions.  Expect some changes next week over there.

Enjoy,

Al
